Seeds of Change
On any given night in our City 14,000 households are at risk of homelessness. Close to 40% of the homeless population in our community struggle with a mental illness and a multitude of issues that contribute to their homelessness. One in four Calgarians know of someone who has been homeless, 34% of Calgarians know someone who experienced homelessness, 50% know of someone who has come close. These are alarming numbers that must change and the key to change begins with affordable housing!
The Alex’s Pathways to Housing program decided to champion this change. Sixteen custom-built planter boxes were created by our clients, with help from volunteers from TELUS, and twelve partner agencies joined Planting the Seeds of Change each working with their clients to create a work of art to display at Olympic Plaza on Homeless Awareness Day.
Planting the Seeds of Change began with a client vision to create something that would grow, provide and bring hope to their neighbours and in its second year we are delighted that the program has grown.
With the planters completed the task of moving them into the community and sharing their beauty and message of hope is our hope – this is why we are offering these amazing planters to the public through the Planting the Seeds of Change Charitable Auction.
Our hope is that local individuals and businesses get into our change movement by bidding on one of the planters. Imagine these works of art displayed throughout Calgary as a symbol of hope and our commitment to end homelessness in our hometown.
The Partner Agencies
Planting the Seeds of Change began from a client vision of a Calgary without homelessness. On Homeless Awareness Day, a group of homeless serving agencies begin planting seeds of change throughout Calgary. Please support us as we raise funds to continue this program on our journey to end homelessness.
The agencies were asked to conceptualize a simple vision – what ending their homelessness would mean to them, we invite you to learn more about our partner agencies and Planting the Seeds of Change.
Many thanks to the following community champions for supporting our efforts – our hope is to see planter boxes proudly displayed on patios throughout Calgary – growing hope and increasing awareness of homelessness and the agencies working to end it in Calgary.
